Delhaize Group to Close 33 Sweetbay Stores
January 18, 2013
Delhaize Group announced plans to close 33 Sweetbay stores in Florida by next month, representing about one-third of the chain, according to Supermarket News. Following the closures, which are expected to be finished in mid-February, the company will still operate 72 Sweetbay stores. Delhaize also announced plans to close eight Food Lion stores and three Bottom Dollar Food stores. The company's CFO Pierre Bouchut said the closures will eliminate stores operating at a loss in the Sweetbay banner. “While these decisions are difficult, especially given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, these actions will continue to enhance the performance of our overall store portfolio and further enable us to deliver profitable growth and accelerate shareholder value,” the company said in a statement.
