Early April Sales Results Mixed
May 08, 2008

Early sales results from retailers reporting numbers on Thursday were mixed, with some retailers surpassing expectations and others missing predictions, according to the Associated Press. A preliminary sales tally by Thomson Financial revealed that five retailers passed expectations, while five missed estimates. Discounters and wholesale clubs, such as Wal-Mart and Costco, were among the top performers in April. Wal-Mart saw a 3.2 percent increase in same-store sales, exceeding the predicted 2.1 percent rise. Costco's same-store sales increased 8 percent, compared to the estimated 6.1 percent. However, apparel stores did not fare well, such as Limited Brands and Pacific Sunwear. Limited Brands saw a 5 percent decline in same-store sales, worse than the 2.3 percent forecast, while Pacific Sunwear reported a 4 percent increase, which missed the predicted 5.6 percent mark.
