Walgreens Reports April Sales Increases

Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen Co. reported total sales of $4.8 billion, a 7.9 percent increase for April 2008, compared with $4.4 billion for the same time period last year. Comparable-store sales increased 1.6 percent, with comparable-store front-end sales declining 3.1 percent and comparable-pharmacy sales rising 4.2 percent. The company opened 38 stores for the month, including four relocations, eight acquisitions and three closures. Calendar 2008 sales were $19.8 billion, a 10.6 percent increase from $17.9 billion. For year-to-date, sales were $39 billion, a 10.1 percent increase, versus $35 billion; while comparable-store sales rose 4.6 percent. Walgreens operates 6,614 locations in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
