Jewel-Osco Bows Second Sustainable Store in Chicago
June 30, 2009
Itasca, Ill.-based Jewel-Osco has unveiled an environmentally friendly building design at 11730 S. Marshfield in Chicago, inside the new Marshfield Commons commercial development center. Designed with strict standards for LEED certification, the new store includes a number of sustainable design elements: a green roof with vegetation beds for energy conservation and storm water run-off reduction; water-saving fixtures and faucets; energy-efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning; a ventilation system that incorporates natural and mechanical means to enhance interior air quality; the use of regional and recycled materials during construction; more than 90 percent of construction debris separated for recycling; and preferred parking for low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles. "Wherever possible, we're focused on building environmentally friendly technology into our new and remodeled stores," said Keith Nielsen, president of the Jewel-Osco Supervalu subsidiary, which operates 185 stores in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana. The Marshfield location is Jewel-Osco's second green store; its first LEED-certified store opened in September 2008 in Chicago's Fulton River District.
