Talbots Reports 1Q Sales
May 15, 2008

Hingham, Mass.-based The Talbots Inc. reported total sales of $542 million for the first quarter ending May 3, 2008, compared to $574 million for the same time period last year. Retail sales for Talbots was $436 million, versus $457 million; while J.Jill reported sales of $106 million, compared to $117 million. Total company comparable-store sales dropped 9.8 percent, with Talbots declining 7.4 percent and J.Jill decreasing 20.2 percent. "Looking at our Talbots brand, after a solid February and a very difficult March, which was felt across the industry, we experienced a significant improvement in April sales," said Trudy F. Sullivan, president and CEO of Talbots. "We had a good customer response to our recent spring deliveries and a very successful response to our annual April best customer event, which led to a positive mid-single digit April comp and a corresponding increase in the brand’s direct marketing sales." The company operates 865 stores in 47 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and the United Kingdom under the Talbots and J.Jill brands.
