Sedano's to Open in Central Florida
December 31, 2009
Hialeah, Fla.-based Hispanic supermarket Sedano's plans to open stores in the Central Florida market next month, according to OrlandoSentinel.com. The company is acquiring three Albertsons stores at 1100 N. John Young Pkwy., Kissimmee; 12981 S. Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando; and 5660 Curry Ford Rd., Orlando. The grocer hopes to keep the stores open during conversion. The success of the Central Florida stores will determine whether the company will move forward with additional locations in the area. "We saw the growth opportunity," said Javier Herrán, director of marketing, Sedano's. The company also hopes to expand into other markets, including Naples and Tampa. Sedano's, which was founded in 1962, has grown into a chain of about 30 South Florida supermarkets, catering to the Hispanic consumer with salsa music, butchers who cut meat to order and a cafe offering pastelitos. The Central Florida stores will measure around 58,000 sq. ft. to 65,000 sq. ft., slightly larger than typical Sedano's locations. They also will carry a different product mix than stores in South Florida, which cater more to a Cuban market.
