Bergdorf Goodman Named Best Holiday Windows in Manhattan
December 15, 2008
DDI Magazine has named the three retail winners of its eighth-annual Winning Windows competition, presenting awards for excellence in holiday window design to New York retail stores. The awards were presented at the PAVE Gala, held Dec. 10 in New York's Gotham Hall in conjunction with The NADI Show. The magazine's editors judged competition entrants on the following three criteria: originality and creativity; spirit of the season; and technical aspects and professional execution.
The Silver Award was given to Sony Style, whose Madison Avenue windows related technology and sweets to perfection. Every window features a different perspective on the theme of "Sweet," featuring delicious displays of consumer electronics tied in with the decadence of chocolates, gingerbread, peppermints and sweet shops--delighting audiences of all ages. These immersive windows allow indulgence even down to an intoxicating chocolate aroma wafting in from the rafters.
The Gold Award was presented to Macy's New York, whose vivid, playful windows have imaginative characters creating five simple Christmas decorations: the Christmas light, the ornament, Christmas snow, the star on top of the tree and tinsel--each represented in its own window. Complemented with music and a voice narrating each window’s original story, the windows are also full of delightful interactive elements, including a touchpad that extracts magical "kindessence," "caressence" and "kazoodlessence" from a viewer's hand, as well as a giant claw machine that can be operated from outside.
Finally, the Platinum Award was given to Bergdorf Goodman, whose intricate, ornate windows pay attention to the smallest detail from corner to corner, top to bottom--even down to the placement of a single grain of sand. With each window paying homage to each of the seasons--winter, spring, summer, fall and holiday--a white-on-white palette permeates the entire display in an ethereal scene. Each window delivers a lesson on scale and creativity, such as the summer window, which provides a snapshot of both land and sea, complete with jeweled merchandise displayed like treasure along the sea floor. These alluring windows draw more than a glance from passersby, inviting the eye to study the minute detailing and breathtaking artistry.
Congratulations to all the winners of this year's DDI Winning Windows competition (click here to see photos). And don't forget to watch for coverage in DDI's upcoming January issue.
