IKEA Opens Swedwood Facility in Danville, Va.

Helsingborg, Sweden-based IKEA announced the opening of its newest manufacturing facility, Swedwood, in Danville, Va. The 930,000-sq.-ft. facility is the company's first furniture production location in the United States, and will employ 175 workers. Swedwood is a subsidiary of IKEA and is comprised of companies who manufacture and distribute furniture. The company established Swedwood in 1991 to protect against the loss of important European suppliers. In addition to handling IKEA's needs, Swedwood has more than 36 production units in nine countries and a staff of 13,000. IKEA currently operates 275 stores in 36 countries.
