Big 5 Reports 1Q Results
May 07, 2008
El Segundo, Calif.-based Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. reported net sales of $212.9 million for the first quarter ending March 30, 2008, compared with $217 million for the same time period last year. Same-store sales decreased 5.1 percent, while gross profit was $71.6 million, versus $75.8 million. Net income was $4.1 million, compared to $7.6 million. "Despite a strong first quarter performance by our winter-related product categories, which benefited in part from favorable weather conditions in many of our markets, we were unable to fully offset the general softness in the overall consumer environment and the substantial impact of very negative sales comparisons in our roller shoe category," said Steven G. Miller, chairman, president and CEO of Big 5. For the quarter, the company opened one new store. Big 5 Sporting Goods operates 364 locations in 11 states.
