January 29, 2010
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced the consolidation of its logistics, real estate and store operations in the United States. The consolidation will divide the U.S. into three regions, Wal-Mart West, Wal-Mart South and Wal-Mart North, and will include separate presidents for each region. In addition, Wal-Mart will create a new division called Global.com to manage its global e-commerce business. Wan Ling Martello, previous chief financial officer, was promoted to serve as chief operating officer of the new division. On Sunday, the retailer announced plans to cut approximately 11,200 jobs at its Sam’s Club Warehouses. Wal-Mart operates roughly 7,870 stores worldwide.
