HEB to Test Solar Power Project at Texas Store
June 25, 2009

This summer, Texas-based grocer HEB is rolling out its plan to become more eco-friendly, according to Statesman.com. On June 23, HEB installed solar panels on the rooftop of a store in Austin, Texas, to test the technology for its remaining store locations. If the pilot program is successful, the project could be extended to other branches. "We are continually pushing for more energy efficiency all across our stores," said Leslie Lockett, spokeswoman for HEB. The $195,000 solar panel installation will cover 2,500 sq. ft. and is slated for completion in July. The grocery chain has also experimented with other renewable energy projects, including a wind turbine, a rainwater-collection system and automated freezer lights. HEB currently operates more than 300 branches in Texas and Mexico.
