JCPenney to Cut Growth, But Continue Sephora Expansion
November 20, 2008
Although Plano, Texas-based J.C. Penney Co. Inc. is cutting back on store openings next year, it will continue to look at opportunities resulting from industry consolidation, executives said at its third-quarter conference call. The chain has completed its 2008 expansion plan of 35 new stores, and will open 17 new stores next year, down from an original 20 — largely due to project delays on the developers' end, said Mike Ullman III, chairman and CEO of the company. J.C. Penney also has completed extensive renovations of 21 stores and made upgrades to 90 other stores across the country, including the continued rollout of its Sephora in-store shops. The company, which currently has 91 in-store Sephore boutiques, plans to open 64 more this year.
