Books-A-Million Reports 4Q Sales, Opens Two New Stores

Birmingham, Ala.-based Books-A-Million Inc. reported a net sales increase of 3 percent for the fourth quarter ending Feb. 2, 2008; while comparable-store sales decreased 1.6 percent. Net income was $11.9 million, compared with $13.1 million for the same time period last year. For year-to-date, net sales rose 5.1 percent to $535.1 million, versus $509.3 million, and comparable-store sales increased 1.4 percent. Net income was $16.5 million, compared with $16.9 million last year. In addition, the company announced the opening of two new stores in Palm Coast, Fla., and Martinsburg, W.Va. The Palm Coast store will be located in Palm Coast Landing and will be managed by Houston-based Weingarten Realty Investors; and the Martinsburg store will be located at The Commons shopping center, and managed by Birmingham-based AIG Baker Shopping Center Properties LLC. Both stores will be 15,000-sq.-ft., and will feature books, magazines, cards, gifts, collectibles, a children's department and a cafe. Books-A-Million operates 208 stores in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
