Office Depot Enters India Market

Delray Beach, Fla.-based Office Depot Inc. announced its partnership with Mumbai, India-based Reliance Retail Ltd. This marks Office Depot's first venture into India. "Reliance Retail has embarked on an ambitious plan to transform the retail market in India. To provide a range of options for business customers, we have partnered with Office Depot," said Bijou Kurien, president and CEO of Lifestyle for Reliance Retail. In addition, the two companies announced the acquisition of Mumbai-based eOfficePlanet, an office products and services dealer. According to Office Depot, Sreenivas Nagappa will serve as country manager for its India operations, based in Mumbai at eOfficePlanet's facilities. "There is tremendous opportunity for growth in India's office supply market to support a fast-growing economy of entrepreneurs, small businesses and multinational corporations," Nagappa said. Reliance Retail owns more than 500 stores in 49 cities in India; and Office Depot operates more than 1,600 stores worldwide.
