GameStop Continues Global Expansion Plan
December 03, 2008
With more than 6,000 global locations and the recent acquisition of France’s MicroMania--making it the largest game retailer in Europe--Grapevine, Texas-based GameStop Corp. has continued an aggressive expansion plan, according to Rli.uk.com. The company opened more than 550 stores in 2008, and is currently averaging about 20-30 new stores openings a week. "There are still a number of territories in Europe in which we have no presence and we are not particularly well established in the U.K. yet, but it is the largest computer games market in Europe, so we have big plans," says James Kirk, GameStop vice president and managing director, Europe. Looking forward, Kirk says, the company is placing an emphasis on improving its existing businesses, building upon its current market share and developing growth into new markets, including the Middle East, China and India. The company plans to open 200-300 stores worldwide next year.
