Supervalu to Expand Save-A-Lot Chain
October 22, 2009
Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Supervalu plans to double the size of its discount chain Save-A-Lot to 2,400 stores over the next five years, according to The Wall Street Journal. Supervalu's CEO Craig Herkert announced the move during the company's fiscal second-quarter earnings call on Oct. 20. "This is not an abandonment of traditional grocery; this is an acceleration of Save-A-Lot," Herkert said. Supervalu's main business will remain its traditional supermarkets, including its Albertson's, Jewel-Osco and Farm Fresh brands. Herkert hopes to open more Save-A-Lot stores (currently there are 1,180 stores) in neighborhoods where they will compete with pricier traditional grocery stores, the paper reported. Save-A-Lot offers a smaller selection of items than typical supermarkets, featuring mostly private-label goods at lower prices.
